Welcome coaches, players and parents. This is the first of many blogs that will appear monthly on the MYSA website. The goal is to provide another source for coaches and parents to gain perspective on coaching with new ideas to implement during training sessions or at home.
As coaches start preparing plans for the upcoming Spring Season, I thought it would be important to review the basics. The Football Association (FA) which is the governing body of English Football has established a great interactive website for coaches and parents that outlines the essential skills for all players U6-U16:
-Running with the ball, Turning, Speed, Dribbling, Heading, and Shooting.
These skills should be practiced at each level on a daily basis by all players (the earlier the age the better). The FA has created a program for coaches to train their players on these technical skills. Each skill comes with many drills and in the end a test of the skills that have been practiced. Lastly the site has certificates that coaches can use to pass out to their players that meet the requirements of each skill.
All coaches of any age and skill level should take a minute to review the site and make an effort to add the drills and tests to their spring season. Parents that are looking to help their children out at home, this is a great family activity that everyone can participate.

Anyone with questions, comments, or feedback regarding the FA Soccer Star Challenge please feel free to add a comment. This blog will be active throughout the spring season for anyone that implements the outlined ideas above.
Happy New Year and I look forward to your comments.
